Lilly Schmaltz is a 23-year old adoptee from China. She was born in Nanning, Guangxi, in October 1994 and adopted through Mother’s Love and Holt International when she was 6 months old. She is now 23-years old and pursuing a PhD in Molecular Biology in Austin, Texas. After rejoining the adoption community online, Lilly realized how much adoptees need to speak up and tell their own stories. In this episode, Lilly talks about her efforts to open up the discussion about adoption and adoption-related issues through her Youtube video series where she highlights her experiences growing up as a Chinese adoptee. In her series, she also speaks candidly about adoption and adoption-related issues such as race, cultural identity, micro-aggressions, and emotional pain.
