Ma-Li Calder, born Ma-Li Shu 舒 瑪 利, is a 50-year old adoptee from Taipei, Taiwan. She was adopted from the Family Planning Association of China in Taipei City, a missionary-based orphanage, at the age of 3 by a British couple who lived in Wales, U.K. She was flown to Heathrow Airport from Taiwan accompanied by a paid nurse and was raised in Wales and England. During her junior year abroad at Purdue University, IN, she bumped into a physics masters degree exchange student from Germany, which sparked an interest in relocating. Ma-Li returned to finish her undergraduate degree in England and eventually relocated to Hamburg, Germany, for a short period. She lived in another region of Germany until her move to Connecticut in 2016. Ma-Li has an interesting perspective on international adoption and identity. She talks about the multi-layered and complex issues surrounding the development of identity as an internationally adopted person and how she has integrated an overall sense of self and identity into a whole. Ma-Li has had a long abiding interest in literature and creative writing and enjoys sharing spoken recordings of some of her favourite poetry online.
The conference Ma-Li talks about in this episode was presented at St. John's University, Manhattan Campus, and was entitled, "Racial/Ethnic Identity Models: Unpacking complex identities, adoptee microaggressions, and oppression." Presenters were Amanda Baden, PhD and Susan Harris O'Connor, MSW. Ma-Li refers to Susan's book, The Harris Narratives: An Introspective Study of a Transracial Adoptee.
